Yunnan Agricultural University obtained the right to grant master's degree in tea science in 1996, and began to recruit international students in 1998. The master's degree programme of tea science is a second-level master's degree programme, which enrolls postgraduates of tea science (academic master, subject code 090203) and agronomy and seed industry (professional master, subject code 095131). Postgraduate training depends on several scientific research platforms such as Yunnan Organic Tea Industry Intelligent Engineering Research Center of Tea College, Yunnan University Intelligent Organic Tea Garden Construction Key Laboratory, Yunnan Tea Deep Processing Technology Center, Yunnan Pu'er Tea Research Institute and Tea Experimental Center. The team members of those platforms are 15 mentors, including 10 professors and 4 associate professors, and 11 of them are doctors, who are all multi-disciplinary full-time teachers. In 2021, the team successfully won the provincial master tutor team project in Yunnan Province.
The main research directions of the programme go as the following: the development and utilization of drinking tea plant resources, the biochemistry and efficacy of tea, the tea-making engineering and quality control, and the tea culture and industrial economy.
