Tea science is a traditional subject with a long history and distinctive characteristics, as well as a modern subject involving natural science and humanities. China is the hometown of tea, and Yunnan is the origin center of tea in the world. Tea is yunnan's traditional pillar industry, a major source of income for millions of mountain farmers and a major tax source for local finance. Yunnan's mountainous areas, especially some poor ones, have long regarded tea as a life industry. In order to accelerate the development of Yunnan tea economy and change the situation that tea professionals had been trained by agricultural colleges outside the province in the past, Yunnan Agricultural University established the major of tea in 1972 with the approval of relevant departments, and began to recruit students in 1973. In 1998, Yunnan Agricultural University began to recruit foreign students. The tea major was the first subject to recruit foreign students. Since 2000, the tea major has been recruiting students from all over the country, expanding the source of students. Over the past 40 years, tea has made great achievements in teaching, scientific research and personnel training, contributing to the development of Yunnan tea industry. In 2005, according to the need of social and economic development for talents, on the basis of the major of tea, a new major of tea (tea art and Tea Ceremony direction) was added, which recruited both liberal arts and science. In 2006, 29 students were enrolled in the first batch. At present, tea science has formed a multi-level pattern of undergraduate students, master's students (including master of Agricultural extension, master of in-service teachers in colleges and universities) and foreign students. In addition to seriously running professional education, we also actively set up training courses for middle and senior tea art masters and tea critics. The tea professional knowledge training class enrolls correspondence students, and at the same time, takes the initiative to go out of school to provide academic education at the specialized level for the employees of Dayi Pu 'er Tea Group, a leading enterprise of Pu 'er tea in Yunnan province.
